Can you use vinegar to etch concrete?
Also asked, can you etch concrete with vinegar?
Urban legend suggests vinegar is a good cleaning agent. Etching – Vinegar's ability to dissolve CaCO3 will dull your marble, travertine, concrete and terrazzo surfaces. It may “clean” the surface but it is also dissolving pits into the finish and effectively dulling it.
Additionally, what can I use to etch concrete? A smooth concrete floor must be roughened before paint will stick to it. You roughen such a floor by etching it with muriatic acid. Muriatic acid acts like liquid sandpaper by roughening the surface of the concrete. It also reduces the surface alkalinity of the concrete that can cause some paints to adhere poorly.
Consequently, does vinegar dissolve concrete?
Vinegar will dissolve concrete - but will take a LOT of contact time as vinegar is a mild acid. Certainly not good for it, especially if clay, concrete, asbestos-concrete, or metal.
Can you paint concrete without etching?
If you choose to skip the etching step before applying the paint, the paint may bubble up, peel or flake off the concrete, especially on smoothly finished surfaces, leaving the surface more unsightly than before you painted.
